A business built by helping people understand what came next.
In the early 1990s, computers were entering homes and workplaces faster than many people could make sense of them. Jamie DJ Shepherd saw more than machines and software. She saw a new way for people to learn, communicate and build something of their own.
Jamie began teaching computers in 1997, including Introduction to Computers, Microsoft Office and the early Internet. She had a gift for taking technology that felt intimidating and making it practical. That ability—to stand between a fast-changing digital world and the person trying to navigate it—became the foundation of Koinweb.
In 1998, she gave that work a name. Koinweb was inspired by koinonia, a Greek word associated with fellowship, participation and connection. It fit a company built around bringing people together through technology.
Growing with the digital world
Over the years, Jamie’s work expanded from classroom instruction and early web pages to website hosting, communications, marketing, brand creation and business strategy. She helped individuals and organizations take ideas that existed only in their heads and give them a name, a voice and a place in the world.
Her background in speech communication and radio broadcasting strengthened the human side of that work. Technology alone was never the point. The point was helping a business communicate clearly, connect with the right people and operate more effectively.
A new chapter for Koinweb
Today, artificial intelligence, automation and interconnected software are creating another transformation—one that can feel just as disorienting as the arrival of personal computers and the Internet once did. Koinweb is stepping into this new era as a Business Modernization Company and a plain-English technology advisor for established small businesses.
Jamie helps owners untangle tool sprawl, connect practical systems and modernize how they operate, market and grow. Whether the first step is a simple website, a stronger professional presence, better reputation management or ongoing Virtual CTO leadership, the approach is the same: begin with the person and the business problem, then choose only the technology that genuinely helps.
You keep the keys
Koinweb believes modernization should never cost an owner control of the business they built. Domains, accounts, content and systems belong in the client’s hands. Recommendations are explained in plain English, work is documented and the door stays open—because a technology partner should create confidence, not dependence.
